01ABOUT THIS PROCEDURE

The same operation, very different bills

A haemorrhoidectomy surgically removes the haemorrhoids — done either as conventional excision or with a stapling technique, usually as a short stay of one to three days. It is one of the clearest examples of Hong Kong's private-price spread: the Consumer Council's private-healthcare study found the 50th-percentile bill for the same procedure can differ by up to 152% between hospitals. On this page you can see it directly — published 50th-percentile day-case totals run from HK$36,206 to HK$62,691, and inpatient totals reach HK$79,987.

That spread is not a quality ranking; it reflects technique, ward class, length of stay and each surgeon's fee. The point of showing real percentiles is that you can ask the right questions before you book — not be surprised by the bill afterwards. Whether surgery is the right treatment for your haemorrhoids is a clinical decision for you and your doctor.

02PUBLIC HOSPITAL · HOSPITAL AUTHORITY

Hospital Authority pricing

On the public side, an Eligible Person pays flat per-attendance fees: HK$250 per specialist clinic attendance, HK$250 for the day procedure, and HK$300 per day for an acute bed if admitted — all bounded by the HK$10,000 annual cap (must be applied for via HA Go — not automatic). The components below are the published fees; the real cost of the public route is the surgical wait, not the bill.

03PRIVATE FACILITIES

Private medical facilities

These are each hospital's own published Historical Bill Sizes statistics (government price-transparency pilot): the 50th and 90th percentile of real 2025 bills, including doctor's fees. Surgical technique (conventional vs stapled), ward class and length of stay drive the spread — a percentile is what patients actually paid, not a quote.

Same-procedure 50th-percentile totals differed by up to 152% between hospitals (Consumer Council, Mar 2025) — checking more than one hospital is worth the time.

Totals include doctor's fees (surgeon + anaesthetist where the hospital reports them together; Union reports the anaesthetist separately). Percentiles are computed per column — splits may not sum to totals.

Set prices from the hospital's own page; the badge states whether doctor fees are included.

Clinic entries are quoted package prices (not ORPHF percentiles) — what each includes varies, so read each source. Prices are dated and re-checked periodically.

04INSURANCE COVERAGE

How insurance treats this procedure

EDITORIAL · WRITTEN BY HKGOODDOCTOR

A haemorrhoidectomy ordered for symptomatic haemorrhoids is a covered surgical procedure under most plans. Under VHIS, surgeon's, anaesthetist's and operating-theatre fees each have benefit caps in Standard Plans, with Flexi Plans raising the limits by tier; a stapling device or a longer ward stay can push the bill above the capped amount, leaving a shortfall you fund.

Because the bill swings so widely between hospitals, your reimbursement limits and your hospital choice interact directly — a plan that fully covers the procedure at one hospital may leave a gap at another. Check your surgical benefit limits against the published percentiles and discuss the technique with your doctor.

05DECISION GUIDE

Weighing public against private

LEANING PUBLIC — WHEN IT FITS
  • Your case is non-urgent and you can work around the public surgical queue.
  • You want the HK$10,000 annual cap to bound your total public-sector spending — it must be applied for via HA Go, not automatic.
  • You are comfortable not choosing your surgeon, technique or date.
  • Cost certainty matters more to you than timing or surgeon choice.
LEANING PRIVATE — WHEN IT FITS
  • Your symptoms are affecting daily life now and you want to schedule surgery on your own timeline.
  • You want to pick the surgeon, hospital and technique (conventional vs stapled).
  • You hold VHIS or other surgical cover — but check your limits against the spread first.
  • You prefer a fixed-price package: published packages here run from HK$37,640 (conventional) to about HK$57,200, doctor's fee included.

These are cost-and-logistics factors only, not medical advice — what fits your eyes, body and history is a conversation with your doctor.

06FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is it true the price can differ by 152%?+

That figure is from the Consumer Council's private-healthcare study: across hospitals, the 50th-percentile bill for the same procedure can differ by up to 152%. You can see the effect on this page — published 50th-percentile day-case totals span HK$36,206 (HK Baptist) to HK$62,691 (Matilda), and inpatient reaches HK$79,987 (HK Adventist Stubbs Road), with the 90th percentile up to HK$107,522.

What does the public route cost?+

Published Eligible-Person fees: HK$250 per specialist clinic attendance, HK$250 for the day procedure, and HK$300 per day for an acute bed if you are admitted. Annual out-of-pocket is capped at HK$10,000, but the cap must be applied for via HA Go — it is not automatic.

Conventional or stapled — does it change the price?+

It can. The published packages distinguish them: one hospital lists conventional haemorrhoidectomy from HK$37,640 (three days, two nights) and stapled from HK$48,960 (two days, one night). Which technique suits you is a clinical decision for your surgeon.

Why is it sometimes a day case and sometimes an overnight stay?+

Technique, pain control and your recovery determine whether you go home the same day or stay one to two nights — the published statistics include both day-case and inpatient rows, and the bill differs accordingly.

Are the fixed-price packages all-inclusive?+

The publishers on this page (Gleneagles and CUHK Medical Centre) include the doctor's fee and state complications cover — that is what the badge on each row shows. Many packages elsewhere do not; confirm the inclusion list in writing.

Will insurance cover the whole bill?+

Often it covers the procedure, but because bills swing widely between hospitals, your benefit caps may not stretch to the most expensive options. Check your surgical limits against the published percentiles before you choose a hospital.

INCLUSION RULE · A private facility is listed if it publishes first-party structured pricing — whether a firm price/range or a labelled "from"/tiered price. Every figure shows its price basis (firm vs from) and its retrieval or effective date, however old. Facilities that are contact-only or quote-only (no published figure) are not listed.

Refresh cadence: about every six months (hospital statistics are republished annually; HA waitlists quarterly). Percentiles are historical bills including doctor fees; packages are set prices whose inclusions differ per hospital — the two are never mixed in one column.
