How we know what we know.

Every figure on this site comes from a source we can name, with a date we can show. This page sets out where each dataset comes from, how often it is refreshed, and the rules we follow when data is missing. Nothing here claims more than what our pipeline actually does.

§ 01

The doctor database

The base record is the Medical Council of Hong Kong (MCHK) registers — the official list of doctors licensed to practise in Hong Kong. From MCHK we take each doctor's name, listed qualifications, and specialist registration. On this base we currently track about 5,414 doctors classified as active in private practice.

We enrich the base with the Health Bureau's Primary Care Directory: practice addresses, consultation hours, and the fees and services each doctor has declared to the Directory. Declared fees and services are the doctor's own submission, not something we verify — wherever they appear on this site, they are labelled as declared.

Hospital affiliations come from the published directories of 12 private hospitals. Each affiliation is quoted as the hospital publishes it, together with the source hospital and the date we retrieved it.

Dentists come from the practising list of the Dental Council of Hong Kong. We track the 2,559 dentists on the current list and show 2,301 on the map; the remaining 258 practise only in the public sector or have no published private practice address.

Chinese medicine practitioners come from the register of the Chinese Medicine Council of Hong Kong. We track all 10,720 practitioners on the register (8,731 registered, 1,959 listed, 30 with limited registration) and show 9,350 on the map. The remainder either have no published practice address or no private practice; the 30 limited-registration practitioners practise only within their approved institutions and are never shown as private practitioners.

Physiotherapists come from the register of physiotherapists maintained by the Physiotherapists Board (Allied Health Professions Council; register as at 30/06/2026, retrieved 2026-07-22). Of 5,537 registered physiotherapists we track the 830 enrolled in the Primary Care Directory — the only first-party source that publishes practice addresses — and show the 813 with a private practice address on the map.

Identity matching is deliberately conservative. Records are joined on MCHK registration number and full-name matching. When two records might be the same doctor but we cannot be certain, we do not merge them — the ambiguous pair is set aside rather than guessed.

§ 02

How often the data is refreshed

Doctor records from the MCHK registers are refreshed monthly. The 12 private-hospital directories are re-scraped monthly. Tool data follows the cadence of its own source, listed in §06 — from roughly every 15 minutes for A&E waits to quarterly for specialist-clinic waits.

§ 03

Missing data stays neutral

When we do not have a piece of data — a fee, an affiliation, a benefit line — it renders as "no data" (冇資料) in grey. Absence is never turned into a negative claim about a doctor, plan, or provider: a doctor without a declared fee is not "expensive", and a plan without an extracted benefit line is not "uncovered". It is simply unknown to us, and shown that way.

§ 04

No ratings, no rankings

We compute no ratings, no quality scores, and no recommendation rankings. Lists are ordered by factual attributes — such as name, district, fee, or waiting time — and the sort order is chosen by you, not by us.

§ 06

Tool data sources

Each tool shows its own source and freshness on the page. In summary:

A&E waiting times

~EVERY 15 MIN

Hospital Authority open data, republished as-is.

Specialist outpatient (SOPC) waits

QUARTERLY

Hospital Authority published waiting-time figures.

VHIS comparison

MONTHLY

Health Bureau certified-plan list and Standard Premiums via DATA.GOV.HK (refreshed monthly), plus benefit schedules extracted from the certified Plan Document PDFs. English and Chinese documents are cross-checked; where they conflict, we show no data rather than pick a side.

Body-check & procedure costs

ON PUBLICATION

Providers' and hospitals' own published price pages and PDFs. Every figure carries its source and retrieval date. If a provider does not publish a price, we show nothing — we never estimate.

§ 07

The chat

  • We do not store chat transcripts. Your conversation lives in your browser session and is gone when you close the tab.
  • Documents you upload are processed to produce the answer, then deleted.
  • The chat explains — it is not medical advice, and it will not diagnose or prescribe.
  • If a message suggests an emergency, the chat is replaced by a full-screen notice directing you to 999 or the nearest A&E.
§ 08

Corrections

If you find an error in a listing — as a doctor or as a user — email us with what is wrong and what it should be. Doctors: please include your MCHK registration number so we can verify against the register. Write to hello@hkgooddoctor.com.
