01ABOUT THIS PROCEDURE

The package price excludes the doctor — read both numbers

A normal vaginal delivery is the unassisted birth pathway, typically a stay of two to three nights. Hong Kong maternity pricing has a trap worth understanding before you book: the advertised "package price" at most private hospitals does NOT include the obstetrician's fee. On this page the fixed-price packages carry a doctor-fee-EXCLUDED badge for exactly this reason — the published packages here run from about HK$23,200 to HK$53,300 by room class, and your obstetrician bills separately on top.

The hospital Historical Bill Sizes percentiles further down the page tell the other half of the story: those totals DO include the doctor's fee, and they run far higher than the package alone. Reading the package as the full cost is the single most common maternity-budget mistake. The two are shown in separate blocks on purpose — never add a package price and a percentile total together.

The public side splits by eligibility. An Eligible Person (with a Hong Kong ID) pays the acute-bed daily fee of HK$300, bounded by the HK$10,000 annual cap (must be applied for via HA Go — not automatic). A Non-Eligible Person pays the published obstetric package: HK$74,000 if booked in advance, or HK$130,000 if non-booked (presenting without an antenatal booking). The components below are the published HA figures.

NON-ELIGIBLE PERSONS REFERENCE · A typical Eligible-Person delivery stay totals under HK$1,000 at HK$300/day. For comparison: the Non-eligible Persons obstetric package is HK$74,000 (booked) / HK$130,000 (non-booked).

03PRIVATE FACILITIES

Private medical facilities

These are each hospital's own published Historical Bill Sizes statistics (government price-transparency pilot): the 50th and 90th percentile of real 2025 bills, INCLUDING the doctor's fee, for a vaginal delivery. Room class, length of stay and any interventions drive the spread. Crucially, these include the obstetrician — so they sit well above the doctor-fee-excluded packages above. A percentile is what families actually paid, not a quote.

Same-procedure 50th-percentile totals differed by up to 152% between hospitals (Consumer Council, Mar 2025) — checking more than one hospital is worth the time.

Totals include doctor's fees (surgeon + anaesthetist where the hospital reports them together; Union reports the anaesthetist separately). Percentiles are computed per column — splits may not sum to totals.

Set prices from the hospital's own page; the badge states whether doctor fees are included.

04INSURANCE COVERAGE

How insurance treats this procedure

EDITORIAL · WRITTEN BY HKGOODDOCTOR

Maternity cover is usually a separate benefit that most plans only pay after a waiting period (often 10 to 12 months from enrolment), and many basic hospital plans exclude normal childbirth entirely. Where maternity is covered, there is typically a fixed delivery benefit rather than full reimbursement — so the obstetrician's separate fee and the room class you pick determine how much falls to you.

Check whether your plan has maternity cover at all, whether you have served the waiting period, and what the delivery benefit is — then compare it against both the package and the doctor's fee, and discuss your birth plan with your doctor.

05DECISION GUIDE

Weighing public against private

LEANING PUBLIC — WHEN IT FITS
  • You are an Eligible Person and the HK$300-per-day acute-bed fee plus the HK$10,000 cap fits your budget — the cap must be applied for via HA Go, not automatic.
  • You are comfortable with the public maternity model — no choice of obstetrician, a shared ward.
  • You do not hold maternity insurance, or have not served its waiting period.
  • Cost certainty matters more to you than choosing your doctor or room.
LEANING PRIVATE — WHEN IT FITS
  • You want to choose your obstetrician and your room class — but budget the doctor's fee ON TOP of the package.
  • You hold maternity cover and have served the waiting period.
  • You want a private room and a known care team for the stay.
  • You understand the published 50th-percentile totals (doctor included) ran from HK$54,286 to HK$102,387 across hospitals in 2025.

These are cost-and-logistics factors only, not medical advice — what fits your eyes, body and history is a conversation with your doctor.

06FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Why is the real bill higher than the package price?+

Because most maternity packages EXCLUDE the obstetrician's fee — that is what the badge on each package row means. The published packages here run from about HK$23,200 to HK$53,300 by room class; your doctor bills separately on top. The hospital percentile totals (which include the doctor) ran from HK$54,286 to HK$102,387 in 2025, with the 90th percentile reaching HK$115,653.

What does the public route cost?+

It depends on eligibility. An Eligible Person pays HK$300 per day for an acute bed, capped at HK$10,000 a year (the cap must be applied for via HA Go — not automatic). A Non-Eligible Person pays the published obstetric package: HK$74,000 booked, or HK$130,000 non-booked.

What is "booked" vs "non-booked"?+

A booked delivery means you arranged antenatal care and a delivery booking in advance; non-booked means presenting in labour without that booking. For Non-Eligible Persons the published public fee is HK$74,000 booked versus HK$130,000 non-booked — booking ahead matters.

Does my insurance cover childbirth?+

Only if your plan includes maternity cover and you have served the waiting period (often 10 to 12 months) — and many basic plans exclude normal delivery. Where covered, it is usually a fixed delivery benefit, not full reimbursement. Check your policy before relying on it.

Can I add the package price and a percentile to budget?+

No — they measure different things. The package is the hospital-and-room cost with the doctor excluded; the percentile total already includes the doctor. Use one framing or the other, never both added together. That is why they sit in separate blocks on this page.

How long is the hospital stay?+

For a normal vaginal delivery the published average stays run about two to three nights, which is why room class moves the package price so much. Your actual stay depends on you and your baby and is a clinical decision.

Refresh cadence: about every six months (hospital statistics are republished annually; HA waitlists quarterly). Percentiles are historical bills including doctor fees; packages are set prices whose inclusions differ per hospital — the two are never mixed in one column.
